Several arguments for reconciliation with Britain were made during the 18th century by those loyal to the crown. Many of those supported by outdated ideas and enforce through fear. Loyalists supported Britains rule for protection (Paine p54) from enemies. Now, unrivaled could reason that a developing countrys military force could not defend itself against that of an established nation. However, if that nations enemies only existed because of its kick upstairs countries alliances, then once independent, the new nation would be allow to establish its own partners as suggested by Paine (p54-55). It was often argued that without Britains support and alliances, America would have no partners in the world.
